Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
