Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
