Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
