The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
